Features
Core features
Flexible schema
MongoDB provides schema control to the developers. This makes updating data modelling effortless, which in turn increases application release iterations.
Rich Query Language
Designed for ease-of-use, MongoDB provides a rich query language, which supports read and write operations, as well as Data Aggregation, Text Search and Geospatial Queries.
Document Database
Work with the natural data type for you programming language. Seamlessly convert database documents to native objects of Javascript, Go, Python or Java.
Horizontal Scalability
With MongoDB's sharding capabilities, data can be distributed across multiple machines within the database cluster. Horizontal scalability is straightforward, simply add additional nodes to increase capacity.
High Performance
MongoDB provides high performance data persistence. Support for embedded data models, for example, reduces I/O activity on database systems and indexes support for faster queries.
Security and High Availability
Included Backup
As data is critical for your business, each of our plans includes backup. Both our Business and Enterprise plans enable you to customize retention policies for your backup.
Replica nodes
Ensure redundancy and increase data availability with MongoDB replication capabilities. Provide multiple copies of data on different database nodes. Replica are key for applications in production, and are available with our business and enterprise plans.
High Availability
MongoDB's replication facility, 'Replica set', provides automatic fail-over data redundancy. With our Business and Enterprise plans, your MongoDB cluster ensures your database is always available.
Encrypted Storage Engine
Encryption at rest, when used in conjunction with transport encryption and good security policies, helps ensure compliance with security and privacy standards.
TLS/SSL Encryption
To ensure data confidentiality, MongoDB supports TLS/SSL (Transport Layer Security/Secure Sockets Layer) to encrypt all of MongoDB's network traffic.
Enterprise-grade
MongoDB Compass
Easily visualize, explore and manipulate your data with MongoDB Compass. An intuitive Graphical User Interface makes it easier to analyze your data-use and optimize performance. MongoDB Compass is only available with the Enterprise plan.
Audit log
Auditing capability enables to track system activity and keep track of who did what on your in your database, which typically strengthens security and helps organizations comply with stringent corporate policies. Available only with the Enterprise plan.
MongoDB Connector BI
MongoDB Connector BI allows you to seamlessly visualize, graph and report, using business intelligence tools such as Tableau, MicroStrategy, Qlik and more. With MongoDB as a data source, you don't need to perform complex ETL processes for data analysis. Available only with the Enterprise plan.
Role Based Access Control (RBAC)
Leverage RBAC to govern access to your MongoDB database and enforce compliance with security requirements. Grant your users one or more roles, that defines their rights to access database resources and operations. Available only with the Enterprise plan.

Why is MongoDB a popular database?
Despite its widespread popularity, you may still find yourself asking 'What is MongoDB good for?' Well, MongoDB can store and manage any type of data, whatever the structure. As a NoSQL database, it is very flexible because it provides schema control to the developers, meaning that updating data modelling is easier. It is also popular due to its scalability, enabling you to store huge volumes of data.
Is MongoDB better than MySQL?
The MongoDB vs MySQL debate continues to rage online, but they are really just different systems with different benefits. The fundamental difference between the two is that MongoDB is a non-relational database, whereas MySQL is relational. The key benefits of MongoDB are that it has dynamic schema so it gives you flexibility to change your data schema without modifying existing data, its also horizontally scalable so you can reduce your workload and scale effortlessly. MongoDB has availability, manageability and speed advantages. Our database offering will soon be enriched by other database engines, such as MySQL or PostgreSQL for relational databases, and Redis for in-memory database.
What's the difference between Essential, Business and Enterprise service plans?
The service plans each represent a different MongoDB as a Service package. Each plan includes varying capabilities which respond to different applications - these might relate to cluster size, the number of nodes in the cluster, security, network, scalability or high-availability. Please refer to the table above to compare the different offerings.
Is data stored within MongoDB as a Service shared with parties?
No. You keep complete control over your data. When using Managed Databases For MongoDB, you are provided with one or several Public Cloud instances that run MongoDB DBMS. Those instances have a storage space that are dedicated to your individual use only and are not shared with anyone.
Can I upgrade to higher capacity nodes?
Yes. As your RAM or storage requirements increase overtime, you are able to upgrade to higher capacity nodes to better serve your needs. However, it is not possible to downgrade to a lower capacity node.
